KRISTINA AUSTI

I am an artist, weaver and educator who has been working with jacquard weaving for 15 years. I have been sharing my passion for jacquard weaving with many artists and students through the years, and it continues to excite and surprise me. My artistic practice is closely connected to what I do, and you can find more information about it on the website austikristina.com.

In my creative process, I work with a TC-2 digital loom and industrial jacquard looms. For the last 13 years, I have also been part-time employed at a weaving mill in Western Norway, designing and creating upholstery fabrics, a job that keeps me close to the craft on both an artistic and an industrial scale.

WHAT IS DIGITAL JACQUARD WEAVING ABOUT?

Jacquard weaving is endlessly rich: a complex yet very rewarding medium. Every thread can be placed with intention, which means the loom becomes a tool for drawing, painting and building texture all at once. It is a slow and deliberate craft, and that, to me, is exactly what makes it so captivating.

By inviting artists to Studio Austi, I would like to share this knowledge and tradition where weaving can be learned without pressure, and where curiosity is always the right starting point. In my teaching, I try to meet each person where they are, whether that means learning the very first steps or developing a more personal artistic practice.

STUDIO

Studio Austi is located in the heart of Bergen, just a short walk from the city centre. It sits within a building that is home to around 40 artists and their studios, a lively, creative community to be part of.

The space is large and full of light. Because it is partly my own working studio, stepping inside means stepping into my artistic world too. Here you will find a TC-2 loom with a warp already installed. At the moment, the warp has 2230 warp threads in wool, alternating between white and black.

There is a wide choice of materials to weave with, and you are welcome to explore them freely, but if you would rather bring your own yarns, that is just as welcome.
